Can Seniors in Assisted Living Communities Still Take Vacation Trips?

Having raised their families and retired from the work force, seniors are often freer to travel than when they were younger. This lets them gain the advantage of setting their own schedules and traveling in off-peak seasons when the weather and crowds are more forgiving. They can also rest assured that their apartments here in Park Regency Loveland are safe while they're away.

Health and mobility issues may make traveling seem intimidating for some, but speaking with their doctors and planning ahead ensures seniors can tap into their adventurous side and make some great memories. Here are some key areas to consider when creating traveling plans.

Medications and Allergies

Make multiple copies of all medications and their generic brand alternatives and dosage instructions. Factor time zone changes into plans, and consider programming reminders into a phone or watch to help ensure medications are taken consistently.

Similarly, write down known medicinal and food allergies, and look into purchasing a medical alert bracelet.

Keep critical medicines such as rescue inhalers or Epi-Pens within reach at all times, and carry a few extra days of supplies in case of travel delays.

Wheelchairs, pacemakers and artificial joints can complicate airport security checks, but calling the airline ahead of time lets seniors make arrangements for alternate screening methods. They can also request mobility assistance and aid through the airport and while boarding to ease the process.

Hotels and Dining

Try to keep unwanted surprises to a minimum through careful research. Look into whether potential hotel and sight-seeing destinations feature a lot of hills or rough terrain. When filling out hotel reservations, ask how far the room is from the entrance, and consider requesting something near an elevator or on the ground floor.

Seniors with food allergies or diet restrictions need to prepare ahead to make certain they have safe, healthy meals at their disposal. Check out the menu selections of hotels before making arrangements, and use sites like Google Maps to locate nearby restaurant choices. By sticking with their normal meal regimen, seniors can help prevent stomach ailments that could hinder their enjoyment of the trip.

Recognize Limits

Include as many breaks as needed in activity plans. These can include a nap in the hotel or a few hours spent in a park or enjoying a cup of tea or coffee at a cafe.

When traveling as a group or with family, setting up rendezvous points and splitting up to explore different points-of-interest for a while lets each person have times that they can go at their own pace.

Travel Internationally at Home

When health and mobility issues make it too difficult to travel far, check out cities in the United States that feel like a foreign trip such as the Danish-inspired city of Salvang, California; the Greek-like fishing town of Tarpon Springs, Florida; or the thousands of tulips each spring in Holland, Michigan.

For tourist attractions even closer to home, look into taking a weekend break in other Colorado cites near Loveland, such as Ouray, the Switzerland of America, or the picturesque Alpine-style town of Vail.
